The Kingdom of Israel
Saul and David
The story starts with a war. KIng Saul defeated many of the Israelites. He conquered many territories which expanded his kingdom. In the Bible it describes Saul not following The Ten Commandments, God rejected him, and Saul died in war. In 1000 B.C., David, the tribe of Judah was the new king. He proved to be the stronger ruler that the Israelites wanted. the kingdom stretched from Egypt to Mesopotamia. David then, named the new conquered city Jerusalem, which is now the new capital.
Life in Ancient Israel
Religious beliefs and laws continued in their everyday life. The Israelites found all kinds of work in the kingdom. Many men were farmers, and weavers , or metal workers. Some became government officials nor soldiers. women ran households and raised children. Mothers and Daughters cooked, cleaned, collected water, and made clothes. Some women work outside of home, like for the wealthy Israelites. Deborah acted like a judge and an adviser. Solomon was really known for his proverbs. Similar proverbs appear in other cultures.
